For this paper, I will discuss the achievements and struggles in completing the MSN program, understand how to complete the required practicum hours, and discuss the possible career advancements one can pursue. My practicum placement as a nurse informaticist in a cancer centre achieved the desired goal of providing me with the opportunity to put into practice the skills and knowledge I have acquired in the course. Next, I will describe how this MSN degree will open the door for new career opportunities and help me make a difference for patients using nursing informatics and technology.

Analysing the MSN Journey

Reflecting on my educational experience as a nurse informaticist training for an MSN advanced degree, I realise that it has proven to be enriching, let alone arduous. Over the years, I have come to understand the role of social justice and equity in healthcare professions as well as balancing the needs of becoming good professional ethicists while observing our American Healthcare ‘Hippocratic Oath’ to maintain patients’ confidentiality and at the same time being fair in our treatments to patients. I have also progressed in my understanding of applying technology advancements and trends in the practice setting, thus effectively embracing technologies like the CPOE, eMARs, HER, and the BCMA, reducing unsafe practices and enhancing positive patient safe care outcomes.

As highlighted in the peer-reviewed article “Oncology Nurse Informaticists: It is an evolving.

Ivanov and Harrison explained that” nurse informatics supports the role of nursing practice as they help enhance patient care and nursing outcomes. This must entail specific knowledge of the nursing profession, specialised in technology. Continued education and training improve understanding of fresh concepts in advancing healthcare technology and practice (King et al., 2020). To validate the findings of this article, I deliberated with another scholar who works in a similar line of study. Thus, we both agreed that the role of a nurse informaticist is of great significance as it enhances patient safety and care quality within healthcare organisations.

My advanced degree from MSN has been a perfect call and transformational. Looking at the knowledge gained in the present subject, I have understood nursing theory, critique research better, and use evidence-based practice. They also enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are helpful at the working-solutions level. Another plus of MSN is the chance to interact with other nursing professionals/ students and instructors from different parts of the country. All the discussions and debates we had in class have been engaging and insightful, enabling me to look at social issues from different lenses.

Here, it is crucial to speak about the benefits I have received from learning as a master’s student on MSN, namely, the possibility of participating in clinical rotations and performing specific projects. These internships enabled me to translate knowledge from the classroom to the practice, and I observed the effect of nursing interventions in improving patient status. In conclusion, undertaking my MSN course was quite a demanding task; however, it is worth undertaking. Gaining this knowledge has equipped me as a nurse informaticist with the capabilities to transform the care of patients and the results for the better.

Enhanced Career Options

Earning an MSN advanced degree can go a long way to open up a broad range of options that may prove beneficial to a nurse informaticist practice in a cancer centre. One can obtain a leadership position within healthcare institutions by acquiring a higher degree, such as a nursing office director in nursing informatics. These roles may demand professional insight into health care administration, information technology or nursing as an expert offered by the MSN degree.

In addition, Nurses with advanced degrees in MSN can help or get research and academic positions such as nurse researchers, nursing professors or clinical educators. These roles demand the application of knowledge in nursing theory, research and evidence-based practice, all of which are taught in the MSN curriculum. For a nurse informaticist, an advanced degree in MSN may further develop abilities in factors such as data analysis, project management, and implementation of technologies within informatics, which opens up promotion opportunities and better remunerations. It was identified that as new technologies continue to be implemented in healthcare organisations, the role of nurse informaticists is to facilitate effective adoption and operation (Booth et al., 2021).

In conclusion, being granted an MSN advanced degree is a wise decision that opens doors to new opportunities and offers an advantage in the competition for careers in the healthcare sector, for nurse informaticists at a cancer centre in this case. Education can enhance skills and knowledge that will make workers happier and may lead to improved patient health needs.

Reflection on Practicum Experience Including Accomplishments and Challenges

Employing myself as a nurse informaticist at a cancer centre, my practicum encounter was both rigorous and fruitful. Every practice period, I tried to apply theory and past experiences to enhance the health of patients and their care. Two of the most notable improvements I achieved during this journey were initiating the medication reconciliation process in the oncology ward and using innovative technologies (Elbeddini et al., 2021). Medication reconciliation involves developing a form and procedure to compare medication and facilitate correct medication administration to avoid medication mistakes. Engaging the nursing staff and physician input made the process that I aided in implementing successfully. However, when I was in my practicum, I encountered specific challenges. One of these was the implementation of medication reconciliation, as too many staff members were resistant to change from the previous style of practice. Thus, I was tasked with educating and training due to executing concerns and helping ensure that everyone understood and complied with the new procedure.

I am grateful for the opportunity to be in charge at my practicum placement because it helped me to build on my leadership and problem-solving abilities. It has also exposed me to how healthcare professionals can collaborate and enhance communication to provide quality healthcare services to patients. As a result of the knowledge and skills acquired in the course, I gained the necessary experience to help me in my future career as a nurse informaticist.

Completion of Hours

In my practicum experience as a nurse informaticist at a cancer centre, I implemented and accomplished my hours regarding the outcome of patients. I ensured that the oncology team followed a standardised process of admitting/ discharging patients electronically and administering care with the help of technology; I also offered educational sessions to the nursing staff and physicians in the oncology ward. I also observed the new process and analysed data on medication error occurrence. I also had the opportunity to learn such essentials as project management, leading people, and communications and was impressed by the colleges’ focus on collaboration in healthcare.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the practicum at a cancer centre as a nurse Informatics specialist was exciting and helpful in my growth. I fulfilled my practicum hours in all the general tasks to enhance patient care outcomes, including formulating the structured medication reconciliation procedure, conducting awareness and capacity-building sessions, and conducting data analysis work. It enabled me to gain insight, project management, and leadership skills and enhance my communication skills. The MSN program has imparted the skills I need to advance my profession and benefit the ailing world. These accomplishments will remain a strength as I advance in my nursing profession with a concentration on informatics.
