Personal Philosophy of Nursing Practice

My philosophy of nursing practice means that care is provided by being compassionate, patient-centered, and respectful of the differences in needs, values, and cultural backgrounds of all people. Philosophy aims to address the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of health while promoting equal access to quality care. Collaboration, effective communication, and practice based on ethical principles are among the essential elements of delivering safe and effective care (Taghinezhad et al., 2022). My philosophy is rooted in evidence-based practice, champions lifelong learning, seeks accountability in professional practice, supports improvements in health outcomes, and enhances trust in the nurse-patient relationship.

Personal Philosophy Intersects With Four Nursing Domains

My philosophy of nursing practice is based on compassionate care, integrating the four domains. The domains include person, environment, health, and nursing.

Person: I treat every person as a unique individual with emotions, social, and spiritual dimensions. My philosophy focuses on dignity in treating patients, appreciating their values and beliefs, and engaging them in care (Ghafourifard et al., 2022). I aim to build trust to empower patients to be fully involved in decisions about their health.

Environment: I believe that the environment plays a significant role in the well-being of a person. My practice creates a safe, supportive, and healing environment, both physically and emotionally (Ghafourifard et al., 2022). This includes creating a culture of respect and collaboration within the healthcare team and working on external factors, such as social determinants of health that influence patient outcomes.

Health: I view health as a dynamic state of wellness, which is characterized by three dimensions: physical, mental, and social. The role of a nurse in promoting health, preventing illness, and supporting patients with chronic conditions is important to me (Ghafourifard et al., 2022). I am committed to education and resource provision to help individuals and communities reach their optimal health potential.

Nursing: Nursing is an art and a science, requiring compassion and an ethical approach to care as well as evidence-based knowledge and clinical expertise. My philosophy focuses on lifelong learning, inter-professional collaboration, and advocacy to advance the nursing profession and improve patient care (Ghafourifard et al., 2022). Through integrating these domains, I plan to provide holistic and individualized care that positively advances the well-being of the patient and supports families and the healthcare system.

Personal Philosophy Align With SDOH Framework

Alignment with Walden Mission

My philosophy of nursing practice aligns closely with Walden’s mission. The mission is to promote positive social change through education, advocacy, and service (Walden University, 2023). By emphasizing patient-centered, holistic care, I actively contribute to improving health equity and addressing social determinants of health, which are critical aspects of Walden’s mission. The philosophy supports a personal mission to advocate for vulnerable populations and ensure that everyone receives quality care based on social, cultural, or geographic differences (Walden University, 2023). My commitment to creating safe, healing environments while addressing disparities supports the goal of making healthier communities. I share the same lifelong learning and evidence-based practice values with Walden University (Walden University, 2023). The mission to utilize education to empower professionals in bringing meaningful change in healthcare systems and policies resonates well with me. By mentoring others, working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, and through community outreach, I intend to contribute further to Walden’s vision for social change in nursing and other fields.

Alignment with SDOH Framework

My personal philosophy aligns with the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework. It centers on the fact that the individual’s health is always connected with broader social, economic, and environmental conditions in which people live and work (Kuehnert et al., 2021). I am a firm believer in taking care of the entire person because health is not created by biology alone but rather by access to resources, education, employment, housing, and supportive community networks. With this SDOH framework in place, I advocate for fair care and work to find out and reduce barriers that fall unfairly on vulnerable populations (Kuehnert et al., 2021). This includes promoting health literacy, connecting patients with community resources, and addressing systemic inequities that contribute to health disparities. By fostering a healing environment that incorporates the patient’s social context, I work to empower individuals regarding their health and wellness. The philosophy entails interdisciplinary teams and public health initiatives to create sustainable change in collaboration (Kuehnert et al., 2021). Whether through community outreach, patient advocacy, or the influence of healthcare policy changes, I am committed to changing the conditions that will eventually lead to better health among people and communities by achieving a healthier condition as contemplated by the SDOH framework.

Middle-Range Nursing Theories Supporting Personal Philosophy

Two middle-range nursing theories align with personal philosophy: Kristen Swanson’s Theory of Caring and Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model. Swanson’s Theory identifies five caring processes (Mårtensson et al., 2020). The caring process is knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintaining belief. All the processes reflect my belief in establishing trusting, empathetic relationships with patients and meeting their holistic needs. For example, during care for a patient suffering from a chronic disease, I pay attention to those specific challenges, which include bodily symptoms and emotional disturbance, to be with him or her to offer an assuring presence. There is competency and compassion while meeting their needs, such as coordination of care plans and education, which represents my commitment to individualized and patient-centered care.

Pender’s Health Promotion Model focuses on empowering patients by influencing behaviors through personal perceptions and environmental factors. In theory, it mainly emphasizes education, motivation, and the removal of barriers to attaining ideal health (Habibzadeh et al., 2021). For instance, if a patient has the risk of developing diabetes, I assess their lifestyle and point out that there is a lack of availability of healthy foods or safe exercise spaces. I tend to align myself with the philosophy of striving for health equity and well-being by doing away with these barriers by working with the patient to set achievable health goals. Both theories provide actual frameworks that enhance my abilities to deliver compassionate, holistic, and proactive care.

Interdisciplinary Nursing Theories Supporting Personal Philosophy

Two interdisciplinary nursing theories supporting my personal philosophy are Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring and Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment. Two common themes in these theories are the holistic nature and the collaborative nature of care, which is reflected in my focus on compassion, patient-centeredness, and well-being. Jean’s theory focuses on a caring-healing environment as well as the nurse-patient relationship (Wei et al., 2021). This theory is in agreement with my belief that care should embrace the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. For example, while providing care for a patient diagnosed with an incurable condition, I engage in creating a trusting relationship as well as a supportive environment in which the patient feels valued and understood. This way, one would practice Watson’s factors like being authentically present and promoting the dignity of the patient so that the care provided to them heals them beyond their condition.

According to Imogene’s Theory, working in collaboration with the nurse and the patient, these health-related goals can be attained. This theory further explains my belief in how empowering patients can encourage an active involvement in their care process (Park, 2021). As I work with patients who are recovering from surgeries: helping them set realistic goals towards recovery, such as effective management of pain or recovery in terms of mobility. Considering the distinct nature of their needs and preferences, we worked up a plan that would truly be one of shared decision-making and mutual respect (Park, 2021). Communication and goal-setting stand as core tenets that complement my approach to patient-centered care, thus rendering interventions meaningful and effective.

Conclusion

In summary, my philosophy of nursing practice is based on compassionate care that aligns with the essential nursing domains, the SDOH framework, and the mission of social change. It is supported by middle-range theories and interdisciplinary theories. These frameworks improve my practice of meeting the physical, emotional, and social needs of patients, encouraging collaboration, empowerment, and equity in care delivery. I am committed to furthering health outcomes, well-being, and meaningful change at both the individual patient and broader healthcare systems levels through these principles and theories.
