Community Description: 

• Describe the community of interest (town/city/county) based on your findings from the windshield survey, the “County Health Rankings,” and “Environmental Justice Dashboard” resources.

The Rescue Mission of El Paso serves the homeless population in El Paso, Texas. This community involves men as well as women across the ages, and ethnic groups, though the majority are Hispanic. The community struggles with problems concerning low income, no or poor access to health care, mental health disorders and substance abuse respectively. The place is poorly provided with schools and jobs, and the accommodation is substandard, meaning that people in this area experience high levels of stress and social isolation.

There is also one positive aspect that a member of this community can boast of, namely the appreciation of the cultural background and the support of neighbors. Hispanic culture prevails in this case so it encourages a laid-back society where people and families can depend on each other. This sense of cultural togetherness can be a major strength in affairs that involve communal participation and health enhancement campaigns.

The problem of high unemployment and low-income levels among the El Paso community constitutes a major challenge for the community. These economic problems raise issues like; inability to afford basic needs including health, school, and shelter leading to conditions such as chronic illnesses and mental illnesses. Lack of economic security can be said to be a major hindrance whenever there is a desire to enhance the social welfare of this group.

Opportunities: 

• Examine one area of opportunity that can be addressed through health promotion and support your recommendations with evidence. 

Since one of the key concerns of the El Paso’s community health is mental health, a direction for development in health promotion is this facet. Since the homeless population is characterized by a high rate of mental illness and substance abuse, enhancing the capacity of mental health treatment may meaningfully affect it. Appropriate activities like mental health programs under community and support groups should be implemented to address mental health problems and help cut down substance use.
