Interprofessional education (IPE) refers to the method of learning where students or professionals of two or more disciplines in the health field learn alongside, with and about each other to enhance collaboration and health outcomes. The idea was created to respond to the growing complexity of health care systems and the understanding that a divided care system leads to medical errors and unfavorable patient outcomes.
In the past, health professionals were taught independently, and this curtailed the knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of each discipline (Aldriwesh et al., 2022). With the development of health care systems, the importance of structured interprofessional learning to promote teamwork and accountability across the team was introduced by such organizations as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) (World Health Organization [WHO], 2010).
IPE objectives in a health care environment relate to the enhancement of communication, patient safety, minimization of service redundancy, and patient-centered coordinated care. Contemporary health care systems are becoming more concerned with preventive care and chronic disease care to enhance health outcomes among the population. Interprofessional education facilitates wellness efforts by equipping professionals to meet such multidimensional components together.
A wellness program may need coordination of the primary care providers, behavioral health professionals, nutritionists, and community health workers. The IPE provides health practitioners with communication and teamwork skills that are required to make such programs effective. Through such cooperation, the risk factors are early identified, patients educated, and interventions created to support healthy lifestyles by teams. The WHO (2010) also stresses that collaborative practice enhances health systems through the expansion of access to holistic and preventive care. Interprofessional preparation, the training allows programs on wellness to be multi-disciplinary; it does not take place in a vacuum.
Patient-Centered Care and the Impact of Interprofessional Collaboration
Patient-centered care is a model which has emphasized the needs, values and preferences of patients in every health care delivery. It entails collaborative decision making, communication of respect and individualized treatment planning. Interprofessional collaboration promotes patient-centered care since clinical decisions are made based on various perspectives. In such instances where professionals interact effectively, their interaction leads to the formulation of detailed care plans that bring about medical, psychosocial, and cultural concerns.
It has been reported that collaborative practice is correlated with increased patient satisfaction with the healthcare services, fewer hospital admissions, and enhanced compliance with treatment plans (Reeves et al., 2016). The delineation of roles eliminates redundancy of services and avoids conflicting advice. Also, communication is improved through coordination, which eases the transition between care environments to a greater extent in chronic patients. In case interprofessional teams are functioning well, the patients get safer, more efficient, and holistic care.

It is a preparation that promotes wellness programs and improves patient-centered care models. Health care organizations use collaborative efforts to enhance safety, quality and continuity of care. Finally, interprofessional collaboration enhances the health systems and leads to improved patient outcomes.
