NURS 5052 EB005 Discussion

One of the pillars of the modern-day nursing practice and the synthesis of clinical knowledge, patient values, and the latest findings of research to make decisions regarding the care provision are evidence based decision making (EBDM). Despite the significance of the evidence-based practices (EBP) implementation, many issues were experienced by the nurses when implementing the practice in the clinical setting in a uniform manner. At the same time, EBDM offers a high potential of patient outcomes, professional growth, and quality and safety improvement in healthcare sector. One should be aware of the barriers and benefits of EBDM in order to provide quality and patient-centered care by nurses (Naz and Ganaie, 2023).

Challenges in Applying Evidence-Based Decision Making

One of the biggest issues of EBDM application is lack of time and resources. Nurses, in many cases, work in a hectic environment in which providing patients with care is a priority over the research or evidence-reviewing. Shortness of time experienced during shifts do not assist in searching, evaluating and using the current evidence effectively. The other major challenge is the lack of access to research content or institutional support (Alahmadi, 2024). A significant number of the healthcare organizations are not adequately trained and do not have easy access to the academic databases and consequently leave the nurses without the resources to practice evidence based. In addition, resistance to change in the healthcare team might also be one of those factors which hinder the adoption of new evidence-based practices. The reason is that some nurses and physicians may remain attached to the old practices or personal experience and therefore, it may not be readily available to introduce the new evidence into the routine care. Finally, another problem is the varying levels of research literacy of nurses; not all practitioners are sure in the analysis of scientific publications and application of findings to a specific case with a patient (Edmealem et al., 2024).

Opportunities and Advantages of Evidence-Based Decision Making

However, the potential of EBDM to improve the nursing practice and patient outcomes is enormous. The fact that it is possible to provide safer and effective care is one of the significant advantages. According to the recent and reliable evidence, nurses will be able to reduce the amount of mistakes, enhance patient satisfaction, and lead to favorable health outcomes (Alsadaan and Ramadan, 2025). The overall outcome of the involvement of evidence-consulting nurses is their trust of their own clinical judgment and empowerment as a valuable member of an interdisciplinary team of care. Furthermore, the evidence-based practice will lead to uniformity in care delivery and consequently, the patients will be relying on interventions that have been scientifically proven rather than relying on traditional or intuitions (Alahmadi, 2024). At the organizational level, EBDM utilization can lead to the reduction of costs, efficiency and quality of care which is in line with the institutional goals of excellence and accountability.

Conclusion

In conclusion, despite the fact that such aspects as time, lack of resources, and various levels of research literacy make the process of evidence-based decision making difficult to implement, the benefits of the practice can often outnumber the difficulties. EBDM empowers nurses to develop effective, patient-centered and informed decisions that enhance the quality and outcomes of care. To attain the greatest possible benefits, healthcare organizations ought to dedicate resources, education and the cultures that foster the integration of evidence into the daily nursing practice. These challenges and opportunities can be used to their advantage by nurses in improving patient care in their dedication and effort and more so in a collective effort.
