As a healthcare advocate, what do you want to know about the legislative process?
When discussing the role and functions of healthcare advocate, it is important to take into consideration how the advocate is going to relate to the legislative structure. I would also like to know how bills are introduced, debated, and made laws especially in terms of processes and time. This plays a crucial role in the knowledge of where to intervene and the key stakeholders, which are the legislators, the committees, and the advocacy groups. As an illustration, lobbying on a specific cause, it is possible to understand which committees consider this legislation in the field and concentrate on those that have the authority to make decisions (Townsend et al., 2020). Moreover, I would like to learn the impact of business and consumer interests, pressure groups, and scientific research on legislation. However, advocates should be capable of connecting with policymakers, and thus, comprehending literature in legislations such as how to author moving testimonies or how to utilize data to leverage policy structures, is the primary key (Hajizadeh et al., 2021). There is one more concern related to the way of how to work across the aisle and what to do not to be sucked into the mire of partisan politics but to help secure the support of the health care issues. I care particularly with the examination of the interrelations within the legislative agency with other organizations in order to advance the legislative agendas. Lastly, I would like to know the post-legislative process: how the regulations that regulate the development of laws are created and the impact of the instituted policies on patients measured. Therefore, it helps me to gain such insights to ensure that as the healthcare policies are passed, they are implemented to their fullest potential and benefit the targeted population.

In your professional role as a nurse leader, what do you want or need to know about the politics of healthcare policy legislative decision making?
On the one hand, as a nurse leader, it is essential to know how the political processes impact the development of health policies and how it is possible to act within them. First, I would wish to know what is making the legislator tick, whether it is politics, needs of the people, or money. This is relevant to come up with future advocacy initiatives keeping in mind the needs of the policymakers. I should also understand how to build a rapport with the legislators and their staff members and make them my source of factual information on health matters. Political action committees (PACs) and campaign contributions are another critical matter and thus the mechanics of legislation conversion is another aspect that will require comprehension (Marks, 2020). This would help me to comprehend how financial and organizational resources can be used in the process of implementing changes in healthcare policies.
In addition to it, one can elaborate on the reasons underpinning the decisions made in the healthcare policies in terms of societal and political processes, such as the shift in population age structure, transition into the economic sphere, and other threats and challenges, including the pandemic threats. The ability to know the influence of these trends on the legislative agenda can help nurse leaders foresee the changes in the strategies. The other point of concern is the mobilization of nurses and other healthcare practitioners to promote policy change through advocacy. Finally, it is significant to understand the way ANA and other professional association’s pressure healthcare reforms and advancement of more nursing-related issues (Abbasinia et al., 2020). By gaining knowledge of these dimensions of Health Care Policy politics, I will be able to stake on positive change that will favour the patients and the nursing profession.
