Educating for Evidence-Based Practice to Empower Clinical Nurses
Slide 1
Good day, everyone. I am Rickeria, and I am here today to present my project, Enhancing Evidence-Based Practice Competency in Clinical Nursing. It is focused on developing the skills of nurses to manage ongoing research in day-to-day care. The acquisition of EBP skills can improve clinical decision-making and foster a culture of safety and quality in nursing practice.
Slide 2 Project Problem
Although evidence-based practice is important, a number of nurses find it difficult to apply the evidence in practice in real-life situations. The general hindrances are high volume of patients, time constraints, and inability to assess research well. The problems are likely to mean that the most recent evidence will be rejected in favour of traditional methods. The gap between research and practice affects patient outcomes.
Slide 3 Quality/safety issue or public health concern
Inconsistent application of EBP poses a threat to patient safety. The risk of medical errors is increased, and the healing process takes longer, resulting in longer. From a public health perspective, suboptimal care is more expensive; it results in more bed days and reduces productivity. Developing better EBPs is a challenge at the unit level, but one that is important for health care in general.
Slide 4 Project Objectives/Goals
This project has 4 goals. First, to increase nurses’ awareness of EBP concepts. Second, to enhance their search, appraisal, and practice. Third, to develop confidence in making informed clinical decisions. And fourth, to promote collaboration and support to attain EBP as a common standard of care. These objectives, taken together, are aimed at the improvement of professional practice and patient outcomes.
Slide 5 Target Audience & Interprofessional Team
The project interprofessional team members include nurse educators, physicians, mentors, quality staff, and informatics specialists. Both of them provide different knowledge to support the nurse in the implementation of EBP. Clinical nurses are the audience. They are mostly interested in safety and development but are undertrained and time-pressed. The training will aim to recognise these issues and show how EBP can actually help them to do their job more effectively and satisfyingly.
Slide 6 Evidence to Support Practice Change
Research of recent years is very supportive of EBP training in nursing. It is important that there is support from the organization. However, it was found that critical appraisal skills workshops contributed to the knowledge and self-confidence of nurses in the use of research evidence by Japanese researchers (Tomotaki et al., 2024). In this context, Mohamed et al. (2024) implemented a web-based EBP training program in Saudi Arabia, and significant increases were noted in nurses’ knowledge, skills, and attitude toward EBP. Participants perceived the online learning environment positively and considered that it could be implemented by healthcare organizations due to its flexibility and accessibility. Finally, Elhabashy et al. (2024) conducted a randomized controlled trial with ICU nurses in Egypt. Structured training programs in EBP were found to be instrumental in clinical competency and had a direct impact on patient care. Together, these studies support the fact that specific EBP training, whether through workshops, online courses, or programs, has an outcome that can be quantified in terms of knowledge, skills, and patient care results in nurses.
Slide 7 Project Elements Outline
The structure of the project has five elements. The first step is a needs assessment to identify barriers to EBP in the nursing unit. Secondly, a good educational program for the delivery of knowledge and skills; Third are, resources (quick reference guides, online resources, etc.). Fourth, learning is sustained through mentoring and collaboration, and not least, the assessment is based on knowledge tests and practice results. All these factors make the project comprehensive and practical.
Slide 8: Practicum Site
Medical-Surgical Unit of the City General Hospital. It will give direct access to the nurses involved in the training process, the classrooms, the IT resources, and access to the hospital library and databases. This project is a natural progression of the Quality Improvement Team’s patient safety initiatives. It is worth mentioning that the information on the patient’s care that is available on this website is also going to be used to measure the effectiveness of training. The project will be highly practice-based, and even after the training, it will be sustainable due to such resources.
Slide 9 Outcomes / Measures of Education
There will be several ways to measure the outcomes of the training. Knowledge gains will be assessed through pre- and post-training quizzes. Skills will be developed through case-based scenarios and supervisor observations. Nurses will report changes in their practice and confidence. Finally, the long-term impact will be assessed by evaluating patient safety and quality indicators at the practicum site. With the help of different indicators, we will be able to make sure that the training will bring effective and actual results.
Slide 10 Summary
Finally, this project addresses the major barriers to EBP and equips nurses with the tools to make research a part of their practice. The project is sustainable and relevant because training is done on the resources available in the hospital and the initiatives that are delivered. Nurses become more confident and competent, and patients receive safe, competent care. Improving EBP is not simply a matter of professional learning or development. It is a system-level issue. Thank you for listening.
