This immediacy improves the efficiency of the work process, reduces delays in the care process, and facilitates interdisciplinary working.
If a patient requires transfer from the Emergency Room to the Intensive Care Unit, for example, a nurse may send the other team a secure message with patient information, vital signs, pending tests, medication history, and more. The care team can plan instead of waiting for a call or paper records. Similarly, secure messaging can enable physicians to consult specialists on the spot – particularly in time-sensitive situations such as stroke or sepsis. Impact on Patient Safety Due to Communication Failures
When things don’t go smoothly–like with no proper tech integration, improper messaging, or human error–these consequences have real implications for patient safety. Delays in communication of critical values, lack of communication of treatment plans, and lack of consistency with regard to updates all increase the risk of harm. Communication breakdowns have been cited as a major contributor to sentinel events at hospitals by the Joint Commission many times.
Communication that is unclear or disconnected may result in medication mistakes or delays in interventions, repeat procedures, or avoidable mortality (Traylor et al., 2025). These tools can minimize delays, enhance coordination, and facilitate real-time collaboration when used appropriately. But if these health technologies are not properly utilized or integrated with other health technologies, there can be severe communication problems, privacy violations, and safety concerns. Even the best communication tools are limited in effectiveness because of the lack of standardized information exchange and hardware integration. Integrating accurate, real-time data with tools at the fingertips of healthcare providers could be difficult and impede timely interventions and decision-making across departments or facilities. Interoperability and well-integrated systems are all the more important in this case.
In the age of digitization, there is a need to invest in technologies that are interoperable, train staff to recognize safe practices, and ensure safe use of technology. These efforts help to safeguard patient information and minimize clinical mistakes and care transitions. The quality of the communication is as important as its speed when it comes to patient safety — not only in terms of content being complete, correct, and timely, but also in providing the right context for the content. An efficient technological setup and responsible communication habits can greatly raise the quality of services provided.
