Culture of Health Safety

The 13 modules of the CDC/NIOSH Workplace Violence Prevention for Nurses were a very interesting and comprehensive learning experience. The training was informative and comprehensive, providing me with a deeper understanding of workplace violence in the health care environment, from the definition to real-world scenarios. This reflection explores the impact of incivility and workplace violence in the clinical environment and looks at how what has been learned throughout this Course could be applied to create a safer and more respectful healthcare environment.

Impact of Incivility and Workplace Violence

A wide variety of workplace violence, including physical assaults, verbal threats, and psychological harassment, was highlighted in the training. At times, it may be subtle, but the rudeness of staff nurses can also be detrimental. Negative comments, demeanor, and conflicts with other people can greatly negatively affect nurses’ mental health in terms of stress, exhaustion, and even PTSD (Khazaee-Pool et al., 2025). I thought about how these actions will reduce an environment of work, communication, and teamwork, and endanger patient safety.

Application of the Course in Recognition and Prevention Strategies

During the training, I acquired an understanding of the organizational and environmental factors that increase the risk of violence in the health care sector, such as excessive workloads, a lack of support from leadership, and understaffing. Beyond displaying strategies such as adapting to the environment, enhanced surveillance, and communication skills, practical skills for early warning indicators, such as increased behavior and agitation, are also required (Albaharna et al., 2024). One very practical paradigm focused on risk evaluation based on the behavioral cues and situational awareness. The training also demonstrated that through cooperation, open communication, and thoughtful implementation of policies, a respectful workplace can significantly decrease risks of violence. Additional intervention modules were covered. Throughout, it was emphasised that early intervention, verbal de-escalation, and the need to ensure that staff are aware of when and how to seek assistance were required. It was also essential that the aftermath reaction, de-briefing, psychological first aid, and comprehensive documentation were equally important. These parts take care of addressing accidents, but they also turn them into learning opportunities to avoid further accidents. Since receiving the certificate, I have been motivated to promote more use of violence prevention tools in my workplace. I see possibilities to use the Course material as a mandatory training component in the annual training and incorporate the Course material in new hire orientation sessions. Regular environmental tests are required to detect and correct risk factors. In addition, encouraging open dialogue and support for all staff members involved in a violent incident can increase the likelihood of reporting and help to minimize stigma and provide emotional support for affected staff (Rodrigues et al., 2021).

Conclusion

The Workplace Violence Prevention for Nurses training left me with a whole new perspective on how prevalent it is for things to be rude and violent in the medical industry. I am confident I can identify, deter, and respond to aggressive or rude behavior in my work environment through techniques and skills learned. Most importantly, I am driven to begin a change in my unit to ensure that nurses are protected, respected, and appreciated in the environments in which they care for patients.
