Relationship Between Research and Evidence-Based Practice
As nurses, we are expected not only to follow what has been done before but also to ask why, to question, to explore, and to use the best available evidence to inform our practice to benefit our patients. At the forefront of this call are two concepts: nursing research and evidence-based practice (EBP). Nurses must understand each of these concepts, as well as how they interact, to be successful in the modern health-care environment.
Define Research and Evidence-Based Practice
Of course, as a nurse, it is expected that you not only follow what has been done before you, but you should ask why, question, explore, and use the best available evidence that you can to guide your practice to support your patient. Two concepts stand out at the forefront of this call: that of nursing research and evidence-based practice (EBP). To thrive in today’s health-care system, nurses should grasp all of these concepts, in addition to understanding how they relate to each other.
Research and Evidence-Based Practice Relate to One Another
Nursing Research is a scientific, systematic process of developing, testing, and evaluating nursing knowledge. Nursing research, as defined by Lobiondo-Wood (2026), is a scientific, systematic means for the development of knowledge on topics of significance to nursing, including health promotion and illness prevention, nursing care and care systems. There are three types of research designs: qualitative (exploring people’s experiences), quantitative (measuring and testing interventions), and mixed methods (both). In any case, nursing research uses scientific methods with strict rigor to guarantee valid, reliable, and useful findings.
However, evidence-based practice (EBP) is the application of the best available evidence from well-designed research studies, along with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values, to inform clinical practice (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026). EBP is more than simply reading research papers; it is critically assessing this evidence, evaluating its quality and relevance, and then applying this knowledge in a manner that is beneficial to patients and their specific clinical situation. The Institute of Medicine has recognized EBP as an integral part of quality and safe care to patients, and nursing has taken it on as a professional and ethical obligation.
Part 2: Theoretical Framework Summary (2 pages)
- In this Assessment, choose two theories from the Learning Activities in Module 2. State the main assumptions about their solution. Be specific.
- Explain how the theories you chose are applied to nursing research. Be concrete and give examples.
- Compare the two and discuss similarities and differences between them. Be sure to cite sources in APA format as needed.
- Summarize two theories of motivation: Key Assumptions.
Summarize the Key Assumptions of Two Theoretical Frameworks
Theoretical frameworks are the theoretical bases of nursing research. These frameworks enable researchers to pose questions, establish variables, and provide contexts under an umbrella of a theoretical framework (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026; Chapter 5). The model that will be used in this assignment will be Roy’s Adaptation Model and Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory.
Roy’s Adaptation Model — Key Assumptions
Sister Callista Roy developed the Adaptation Model in the 1970s, and it has developed over time. It is grounded in the assumption that humans are adaptive systems that are stimulated by both internal and external stimuli (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026, Chapter 5). According to Roy’s Adaptation Model, there are four modes of adaptation to stimuli:
- Physiological/physical
- Self-concept/group identity
- Role function
Interdependence (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026, Chapter 5).
Roy’s model is based on the following key assumptions:
The person is a biopsychosocial being who is continually engaged with a changing environment.
The fact is that health and illness are two hard realities of human life.
The nurse’s responsibility is to facilitate adaptation by observing behavior and stimuli influencing it.
Adaptation supports integrity and is part of being healthy, living a good life, and dying with dignity.
The model assumes that stimuli could be focal (the stimulus presented), contextual (background stimuli), and residual (unknown or vague stimuli).
Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory – Key Assumptions
Developed in the 1950s, Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory is based on the premise that people have a natural ability and a responsibility to self-care. The theory is made up of three interconnected theories: the theory of self-care, the theory of self-care deficit, and the theory of nursing systems (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026, Chapter 5).
Orem’s theory has several assumptions such as:
Humans are not objects; they can reflect and symbolically think for themselves
Self-care is a goal-directed human activity, which is a learned behaviour necessary to maintain life, health, and well-being.
The concept of self-care deficit is when the need for self-care is greater than the ability to act for self-care.
Nursing is a legitimate way of addressing the deficit of self-care in the human condition (Orem, 2001, as cited in Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026).
The nursing system may be compensatory, partially compensatory, or supportive-educative depending on the severity of self-care deficit suffered by the patient.
Theoretical Frameworks Are Used in Nursing Research
Roy’s Adaptation Model in Nursing Research
The Roy Adaptation Model has been widely applied in nursing research, particularly in examining patients’ adaptation to chronic diseases, disability, and significant life changes (Chen, 2025). Since the model focuses on the person’s adaptation to stimuli and the aim of positive adaptation, it offers a way to conceptualize studies that assess patient outcomes in the four adaptive modes.
For example, Roy’s model has been used in research to investigate physiological (coping with side effects), psychological (coping with fear and uncertainty), and social (coping with role function and relationships) adaptations in individuals experiencing cancer treatment (chemotherapy) (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026, Chapter 5). The model helps nurses to identify stimuli that cause responses that result in maladaptation and to select interventions to improve adaptive responding. For instance, a research study using Roy’s model might evaluate the effects of a psychoeducational program that nurse to enhance adaptive coping in patients newly diagnosed with heart failure.
Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory in Nursing Research
The Roy Adaptation Model has been widely applied in nursing research, particularly in examining patients’ adaptation to chronic diseases, disability, and significant life changes (Chen, 2025). Since the model focuses on the person’s adaptation to stimuli and the aim of positive adaptation, it offers a way to conceptualize studies that assess patient outcomes in the four adaptive modes.

Similarities and Differences
Roy’s Adaptation Model and Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory have key similarities, but also have important differences that point to different understandings of the nature of nursing and of the patient.
For one thing, both are grand theories that span the wide range of nursing care and can be used in a variety of patients and settings (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026, Chapter 5). Both view the person, not merely as a biological entity, but as a cognitive, emotional, and social person. They also recognize the importance of the environment in health and understand that the nurse is an active participant who evaluates, plans, and implements for health and well-being. Both frameworks have been used to generate extensive research fields in nursing, and have been tried, tested, and improved over many years of research.
However, there are some differences between the two models. Roy’s Adaptation Model focuses on adaptation – the notion that nursing should help patients have positive adaptation to stimuli. The focus is on the patient as a responder to stimuli and the nurse as a stimulus stimulator to improve adaptation. By contrast, Orem’s theory is focused on self-care – the notion that patients are autonomous beings who should be trained and encouraged in self-care. In Orem’s theory, the patient is not only a responder but an active agent in his or her care, and the nurse’s role is to compensate for a self-care deficit, rather than to manage the environment.
Roy’s (2000) model is more frequently applied in research related to acute illness, adaptation to crisis, and psychosocial responses to health stress, whereas Orem’s theory is more likely to be applied to research on chronic illness, patient education, and health promotion (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber, 2026, Chapter 5). Both, however, continue to be useful for conducting nursing research and providing evidence-based practice.
