Module 1, Part 1: Sampling Method Evaluation (500 words)
Read the Cannady and Adams (2021) study and reflect on the sampling methods that were used in this study. After that, discuss the merits and demerits of the sampling method used in this study. Be specific and provide details and examples. Were reliable and valid results obtained from the sampling method in this study? Why or why not? What steps could the researcher have taken to enhance the sampling process? Be specific and use evidence from Learning Activities and readings from Module 1 & 2 to support your statements.
Sampling Method Used
Cannady & Adams (2021) used a convenience sampling method, choosing NP students who were conveniently available to participate in a session focusing on veteran-specific education and PTSD treatment. This type of non-probability sampling is frequently employed in academic settings because the setting is simple and there is no existing infrastructure to reach the target population, and it also has the advantage of being more cost-effective.
Strengths of the Sampling Method
One of the strengths of the convenience sampling method used in this study was that researchers were able to reach individuals who were directly targeted by the intervention and were best suited for the study. The purpose of the study was to sample students who were already enrolled in related courses for this population, so as to ensure that the samples matched the intent of the study. Furthermore, the administration of the session in a real classroom setting added to the ecological validity of the results, with implications that will transfer to the realm of education.
Weaknesses of the Sampling Method
Although it is easy to administer, the convenience sample may have selection biases. The results of the post-survey may have been influenced by participants’ pre-existing motivation for caring; the convenience sample could make it unrepresentative of nurse practitioners’ populations in general.
Reliability and Validity of the Results
The pre- and post-intervention comparisons lend some support to the internal validity of the study by offering information on the immediate changes that occurred in comfort levels and knowledge. The study is not, however, randomized or stratified, which severely restricts the external validity. The findings do not necessarily reflect the views of all nurse practitioner students, so it is not possible to confidently generalize the findings to other populations. Also, it is not possible to determine the effectiveness of the intervention in the long-term without a control group or follow-up.
Suggested Improvements
Stratified random sampling might have been used in order to have a more representative sampling across important demographic groups (e.g., academic year, years of clinical experience, institutional background). This would minimize selection bias and enhance generalizability. Unlike Cannady and Adams (2021), the study by Kariri and Almubaddel (2024) showed a more organized and extensive method that involved a combination of bibliometric analysis and a cross-sectional survey with purposive sampling and well-defined research criteria. They used a sampling method that increased the quality and usefulness of the results. Such rigor and expanded inclusion/exclusion criteria and a multi-institutional sample would have bolstered the design of Cannady and Adams (2021), and the results would be more trustworthy and valid in a range of settings.

Summarize research design | In this study, the data were collected by two main methods, as per the dual structure of the study. The bibliometric analysis was performed on data obtained from the Scopus database, with the keywords generated by the MeSH terms. This meant that all literature relevant to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was included and there were no time or geographical restrictions. A systematic and structured retrieval process was used, following the PRISMA guidelines. This stage was dedicated to obtaining publication data that included author affiliations, keywords, publication year, and citation data. The cross-sectional component of the study was aimed at gaining insight into the implementation of CBT in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. No specific instruments or participant numbers were mentioned, but the study did provide data from the reality of the region with regard to awareness, access, and implementation of CBT. This section probably consisted of surveys or observations to gauge the use of CBT during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially online or via the internet. These two methods of data collection gave the global picture of research activity and the micro picture of the clinical reach of CBT. |
Describe sample population and selection methods | Specialized software like Bibliometrix (an R package) and VOSviewer were used for data analysis. These programs enabled the analysis of co-word frequencies, collaborative patterns, keyword mapping, knowledge structures, and performance indicators in the given literature. A polynomial regression analysis was performed on the number of publications related to CBT in the literature, and shows that there is a very strong trend that this number increases over time, with a regression coefficient of 0.945 and an annual growth rate of 12.67%. This suggests that research in the region has been gradually gaining in magnitude since 1979. The results indicated that five countries made the biggest contribution to CBT literature: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and the Netherlands. Themes that emerged from the studies were depression, oppositional defiant disorder, schizophrenia, and implementation strategies. The thematic map, however, did not have a comprehensive representation of all themes expected. Furthermore, the study revealed major shifts in the evolution of topic areas with new ones being developed and previous ones becoming less prominent. Regarding the cross-sectional section, results indicated that more and more studies focused on CBT interventions conducted online, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study highlighted the need for training, public awareness, and research efforts to enhance the implementation of CBT in clinical settings, particularly in areas such as Saudi Arabia. |
Describe data collection methods | A dual-method design is a mix of bibliometric analysis and a cross-sectional approach. This enabled them to look at CBT from two angles: firstly, the academic trajectory of CBT shown in the global literature and secondly, the implementation of CBT in a clinical setting. The combination of these two approaches leads to a more comprehensive understanding of the research and use of CBT and makes the findings more meaningful and applicable to the field of mental health care. The second aspect is Comprehensive Data Coverage from the Scopus Database. The second aspect is Comprehensive Data Coverage from the Scopus Database. While the ability to search by year and region is not as significant, comprehensive data coverage within the Scopus database allows users to see a significant amount of research without limit. This broad perspective allowed for the detection of trends over time, important contributors, and changing themes in CBT literature. The addition of 2,757 studies added depth and credibility to the analysis and gave the study depth and credibility to its findings regarding trends in global research. |
Summarize data analysis and results | The study also provides insights gained from CBT implementation in the real world in Saudi Arabia but provides no details of the survey instruments, sample size, participant demographics, or data collection methods. The lack of detail makes it hard to evaluate the validity and reliability of the cross-sectional results. The findings regarding CBT implementation are less transparent and difficult to assess without information on the selection of participants or the methods used for collecting data. 2. Incomplete thematic mapping The article admits that the thematic map was not comprehensive of all expected research themes in CBT literature. This indicates that some key issues may be missing or inadequately covered in the analysis. Consequently, the thematic overview of the study may be limited, biased, or incomplete and may not be an effective guide to future research. This divide can be a problem in understanding the progress of CBT for all the relevant psychological disorders. |
Identify two strengths of the study and explain why they are considered strengths. | 1. Use of a Dual-Method Research Design Dual-method design combines both bibliometric analysis and a cross-sectional approach. This allowed the researchers to examine CBT from two perspectives, its academic development through global literature and its practical application in a clinical setting. By integrating these two methods, the study presents a more complete picture of how CBT is both researched and used, making the findings more meaningful and relevant to real-world mental health care. 2. Comprehensive Data Coverage through Scopus Database Comprehensive data coverage through the Scopus database provides access to a large volume of research without limiting the search by time or geography. This wide scope enabled the identification of long-term trends, influential contributors, and evolving research themes in CBT literature. The inclusion of 2,757 studies added depth and credibility to the analysis, enhancing the reliability of the study’s conclusions about global research patterns. |
Identify two weaknesses of the study and explain why they are considered a weakness. | 1. Limited detail in the cross-sectional component While the study mentions insights gathered from real-world application of CBT in Saudi Arabia, it lacks specific information regarding survey instruments, sample size, participant demographics, and data collection procedures. This absence of detail makes it difficult to assess the validity and reliability of the cross-sectional findings. Without knowing how participants were chosen or how data was collected, the conclusions about CBT implementation remain less transparent and harder to evaluate. 2. Incomplete thematic mapping |
In your own words, explain how the findings of this article could effectively be used in clinical practice (5–7 sentences). Be specific and include details.
The findings of this bibliometric analysis offer valuable insight into how cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has evolved across various psychological conditions, including depression, schizophrenia, and oppositional defiant disorder. This allows mental health professionals to identify the most researched and evidence-backed areas of CBT, guiding them to use interventions that have proven clinical effectiveness. The rise in internet-based CBT, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the feasibility of teletherapy as a viable treatment option, particularly in settings with limited in-person access.
Clinicians can use this trend to adopt hybrid or fully online models of care while maintaining evidence-based standards. The identification of research gaps and emerging themes enables practitioners to remain updated with current innovations and tailor treatment plans based on recent developments. This is particularly beneficial when treating culturally diverse populations or applying CBT in non-Western settings, like Saudi Arabia, where awareness and training still require improvement. Moreover, knowing which countries are contributing most to CBT literature may help clinicians seek international collaborations or resources for continuing education.
