Speaker Notes: Hello, everyone. For today’s lesson, we will be learning about the nurse as a knowledge worker. This presentation will cover the concept of a knowledge worker, what nursing informatics is, the role of nurse leadership within that, and apply the concept through a hypothetical scenario from real-life nursing. The access to, collection, and use of data to construct clinical reasoning and judgment will be explored. This is done to demonstrate the use of information technology (IT) in the nursing profession to improve patient outcomes.

Slide 2: Concept of a Knowledge Worker

Speaker Notes: The term “knowledge worker” was coined by Peter Drucker in 1959. The knowledge workers, however, are those who deal with and manipulate information as an essential part of their work. Healthcare professionals, such as nurses, can use this capability to analyze patient information, make informed decisions, and use their knowledge to enhance outcomes for patients. Knowledge Workers are constantly searching for and using new knowledge to address complex issues. They make decisions, apply specialized knowledge, and/or think critically. So, Knowledge Workers are essential to the innovation and the efficiency of any organization.

When it comes to using informatics to enhance patient care and operational efficiency, nurse leaders are invaluable knowledge workers. They enhance communication, streamline processes, and inform decision-making based on data. Nurse Managers can guarantee their teams have all the resources they need to deliver top-notch care by advocating for the use of informatics.

Speaker Notes: Envision a situation where there are a lot of medication errors at a hospital. To help solve this problem, the nursing informatics team is gathering and analyzing medication administration data. They collect data from eHRs, reports, and staff feedback. This information can be used to build patterns and pinpoint the root causes of errors, which may include miscommunication or inefficiency in the workflow. The team can use this data to identify trends and create interventions, such as better training or medication administration procedures that can help minimize medication errors.

Medication administration records give specific information about each time medication is administered, such as the medication type, dosage and time. Any errors or near misses are recorded in an incident repo, rt which can help to identify any potential issues. Qualitative information about perceived challenges and suggestions for improvement is obtained through staff feedback surveys. These data sources allow for a holistic picture of the problem and provide guidance on possible solutions.

Speaker Notes: Getting the data that is needed and gathering the data to accomplish that goal requires multiple steps: The nursing informatics team pulls electronic health records and medication administration records from the hospital’s information system. The hospital reporting system is used to collate incident reports. Staff feedback is gathered via electronic and/or paper surveys, conducted with nursing staff. It is important to ensure data accuracy and completeness, so the team can do further audits or follow-ups where necessary. Patient and staff data are kept secure and in an ethical manner throughout the process.

Speaker Notes: The collected data can be analyzed to provide important insights and patterns for the nursing informatics team to consider. They may find or instance, that some patient groutimesr times of day are more prone to medication error. They could also uncover systemic issues, such as inadequate staff training or confusing medication labeling. This knowledge has a very great value, and it can be applied in creating targeted interventions. The team will be able to determine what these are of these medication errors so that evidence-based strategies can be implemented to reduce medication errors and prevent them from happening again.

Speaker Notes: Nurse Leaders apply knowledge gained from data analysis to practice using clinical reasoning and clinical judgment. They assess issues they have identified and make decisions about what steps to take to deal with the issues. This might include a change in protocol, improving employee training, or technology. Nurse leaders also take into account the impact that their decisions will have on the organization, its efficiency, and the workload of staff, in addition to patient safety.
