Assessment 5: Completion of Practicum Hours

I have completed 100 hours of practicum at a 30-bed Medical-Surgical Unit at a local hospital as a part of the MSN program. During these hours, I did get to practice what I have learned in actual clinical situations, in specific cases, and those areas that are staff well-being, staff-centred care, and leadership. I assessed the working environment with my preceptor, tried to help nurses and understand more about what issues they must address during their work, including burnout, nursing staff, and acute patients.

This is among the critical projects which I was collaborating on, helping the team move out of the traditional shift handoff into bedside shift reporting. It was achieved using the PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) method, which served to train the staff and create some visual representations to comprehend the change more readily. I also gathered information about the professional experience of the staff as part of my team and how the environment affects their well-being. These experiences helped me to develop my leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.

After completing the practicum, I appreciate the importance of advocating for nurses just as much as for the patients. I have much to learn from the idea of collaboration and adaptability as well as change leadership. These 100 hours have given me substantial groundwork to pursue a capstone course and increase my self-efficacy regarding my potential positive impact on the nursing field.
