Professional Identity and Capstone Planning
This is a reflective paper that evaluates my personal growth as a nursing student at the degree level in terms of how my specialization and practicum experiences have shaped my identity and my future ambitions. It also talks about how to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in nursing practice and the importance of these concepts in patient-centered care, modeling professional roles, and the organizational culture. Finally, it also reflects on my expanding interests in the master’s in nursing (MSN) capstone project with a focus on the opportunities to address critical issues in healthcare by engaged use of evidence-based, equitable, and patient-centered interventions to foster both clinical and professional development.
As a master’s-level nursing student, reflect on how your specialization and practicum courses have influenced your professional identity. What are your goals for future career development?
My practicum and specialization courses have been instrumental in shaping my professional identity as an evidence-based, patient-centered nurse leader. These experiences have led me to increase my ability to translate theory into practice, critically assess complex cases, and work with interprofessional teams to maximize care outcomes. I have also increased my devotion to the enhancement of the quality of care, ethical care, and health equity. The future goals of my career include a climb to leadership and teaching roles, contributing to better policies and practices, and pursuing continuous professional growth to become even more proficient in the fields of advanced practice nursing and patient safety.
How can nurses integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion as core components of their professional identity?
Diversity, equity, and inclusion can be integrated into the professional identity of nurses through cultural humility, making care respectful of the background of any individual patient and advocating for the higher-risk populations. It involves active listening, consideration of bias, and commitment to life-long learning about cultural competence. Equity can be promoted by nurses through the social determinants of health. They should also guarantee equal access to resources and be engaged in policy activities aimed at reducing inequalities (Flaubert, 2021). Inclusion can be encouraged through the creation of an environment where patients and fellow workers feel that they are valued and that they have a sense of worth. With the application of the concepts of DEI, nurses develop trust, improve outcomes, and provide ethical care that is patient-centered.
Think about a patient-centered care experience in which you applied diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. How did you empower patients to make their own health decisions during that experience?
I provided patient-centered care to a patient with low levels of health literacy who was a non-English-speaking patient. To offer equal care, I took interpreter services and used materials to educate the patient in their native language. I asked questions, clarified medical terms, simplified treatment, and ensured the patient had a complete understanding of their choices. I increased inclusion and trust by being sensitive to cultural habits and involving family support where needed. This approach enabled the patient to act as a participant in the decision-making process, choose the most congruent care plan with their values, and be confident that they can take care of their health beyond the hospital.
How can you inspire colleagues to uphold racial and social justice efforts and serve as professional role models in addressing implicit bias at work?
I will be able to encourage employees to uphold racial and social justice by treating them fairly and respectfully in every interaction, building a culture of accountability, and encouraging open conversations about implicit bias when it happens. By supporting reflective practice and transparent discussions around diversity, it is possible to help the staff become conscious of their assumptions and become culturally humble (Stubbe, 2020). I will also be able to share evidence-based materials, promote continuing DEI education, and promote policy changes that seal gaps. I am a role model to encourage others to even integrate justice and diversity in practice by always demonstrating fairness, compassion, and representing every patient. Collectively, we can create a health care atmosphere that is more inclusive and just.
What topics interest you for your MSN capstone project? Reflect on opportunities you encountered during your specialization courses. Consider your passions within nursing and any specific issues or challenges you’d like to address.
Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSIs) in critical care are the least studied area of quality improvement programs that I am most interested in knowing about in my MSN capstone project. The relevance of evidence-based bundles, staff education, and electronic health record (EHR)-driven monitoring was highlighted in my specialization courses, and they signify my interest in patient safety and infection prevention. Another way I perceive the possibility of mitigating care disparities is to engage in the implementation of equity-based measures in prevention programs. The project would allow me to integrate leadership, clinical competence, and systems thinking to improve care outcomes, make the staff more accountable, and contribute to sustainable change in nursing practice.
