    Lobbying for Change

    To,

    The Honorable Governor Wes Moore,

Maryland State House, 100 State Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401, United States.

    Dear Governor Moore,

I am compelled to write this because of the critical issue of high numbers of patients returning for treatment. The high patient readmission rates impose expensive fines on patients imposed by health agencies, add additional costs and costs to daily resources, and reduce patient satisfaction and undermine the quality of provided care (Berry et al., 2020). This high rate of readmission to the hospital is detrimental to the entire neighborhood, and weak patients, such as the old, poor, and chronically ill, cannot receive medical assistance. The hospital has more money issues, the staff is demoralized, and the resources are not utilized well, and all this is because we have too many patients recurring in the hospital who have to be treated once again.

A high number of patients coming back to Mercy Medical Center after discharge is a huge challenge to the hospital’s cost and the quality of care it offers to the patients. The hospital can quantify the effects of the problem by examining the amount of money CMS fines the hospital, the amount of money the hospital spends on additional beds, employees, and supplies, and the low results of patient satisfaction surveys (Sheehy et al., 2023). This problem undermines the trust that the community has in healthcare services and diminishes access to care among the most in need individuals. Money issues within the hospital, demotivation among the staff, and inability to access resources where they are required make it difficult to maintain the quality of healthcare.

Reducing the number of readmissions has much to be desired. The fewer individuals who will be required to revisit the hospital, the more money saved by CMS due to the penalties, which will be saved by Mercy at low operating costs. Whenever readmission rates reduce, health outcomes will improve, and patients will feel more content with their services; better patient outcomes will be achieved sooner (Sheehy et al., 2023). When patients see that the hospital provides superior quality care at a greater pace, more of them would be willing to visit it. Failure to address this readmission issue will make Mercy Medical Center continue to lose money. This will not only worsen treatment but will kill the trust of people in the organization, and this may compel our hospital to cut services.

Studies by Viftrup et al. (2020) indicate an increase in expenses, money fines, and dissatisfied patients in hospitals that have excessive returning patients. Various researchers have concluded that providing patients with the right education and assistance once they leave the hospital will result in a reduced number of people having to visit the hospital again, with the help of custom materials and instructions (Akkus et al., 2021). Various interventions to manage medicine at home, such as Internet-based consultations and medication administration guidance that allow patients to remember to take their medicine properly, are more effective in terms of patient recovery and reducing the patient readmission rate (Haleem et al., 2021).

Such endeavors require investment of money in the short run, but studies have indicated that they pay off in terms of finances in the long run. Patient programs should address various cultural requirements and be easy to use by different individuals to ensure that they can be effective (Pavedahl et al., 2022). Create resources that honor the cultures of the patients and ensure that programs assist everyone to receive the care they require, regardless of the amount of money they possess, to be sure that health outcomes improve. Unfair disparities can be resolved (Farooqi et al., 2022).

As a nurse, I have realized that patients are generally not good at grasping and following intricate discharge information. My experience as a professional reveals that patients with simple health knowledge and with little assistance can find it challenging to adhere to their medical prescriptions. This tends to cause unnecessary readmissions. Excessive readmission rates at the Mercy Medical Center undermined our capacity to provide effective service to patients, as well as reduce employee satisfaction. The issues of patient care expose a direct requirement for better medication prescriptions and enhanced healthcare education and service coordination (Karam et al., 2021).

Mercy Medical Center has significant challenges due to the high levels of re-hospitalization of patients. I am requesting your support to institute proper measures, such as the inclusion of post-discharge care funds, as well as ensuring transition policies and custom programs for the vulnerable patients. You have a lot of time and attention, which we appreciate and are grateful to have you with us in making our community healthier.
