    Lobbying for Change

    The Honorable Governor Jay Inslee,

Office of the Governor, PO Box 40002, Olympia, WA 98504-0002, United States

    Dear Sir,

The awareness I am writing about concerns a highly serious issue of nursing understaffing in hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the state of Washington. The resulting understaffing has led to increased workloads on the nurses, burnout, and failure to offer sufficient and safe care to the patients (Washington State Nurses Association, 2022). This lack of sufficient numbers impacts negatively on patient outcomes, particularly in underserved and rural areas where low access to healthcare services already exists. Under-staffing further contributes to the delayed treatment, decreased quality of care, and higher rates of complications that can be prevented, overloading patients and their families (Senek et al., 2022).

When the solution to this problem is found, hospitals will expect a higher level of patient safety, enhanced morale of nurses, reduced turnover, and enhanced resource efficacy. Conversely, the inability to act will likely result in higher costs of operations, burnout among nurses, reduced patient satisfaction, and healthcare disparities (Barlean, 2024). The implementation of certain recruitment, retention incentives, and safe staffing policies can be used to influence such undesirable results and provide equitable and quality care throughout the state of Washington.

    • Staffing and Equity

The literature indicates that Rural healthcare staffing shortage is a significant risk to patient care and the economic viability of medical institutions in the state of Washington. Understaffed units often result in the absence of timely follow-ups, providing patient education, and patients with more complex conditions, which contribute to high operating costs and decreased satisfaction (Washington State Nurses Association, 2022).

Haleem et al. (2021) note that it was established that organized post-discharge education, medication guidance, teleconferences, and home-based support programs would reduce the number of Preventable hospital readmissions and positively influence patient outcomes. Furthermore, education of patients according to cultural peculiarities and the involvement of community health workers help to make care accessible and appropriate to every group of individuals with reference to the social determinants of health and promote healthcare equality (Haider & Abbas, 2025).

Such interventions have ethical implications to prevent discrimination and provide patients from low-income or marginalized groups with equal access to quality care in comparison to other patients (Cheraghi et al., 2023). By appropriate staffing, culturally competent and community-based follow-up, hospitals in the State of Washington will be able to build on eradicating Preventable hospital readmissions and ensuring equitable and effective care to every category of people.

    • Nurse Staffing Intervention

The practical experience and the best practices contribute to the strategic planning and the risk evaluation of how to resolve the problem of nurse staffing inadequacy in Washington State. The planning shall also involve preparation of the workforce, educating and engaging patients within a culturally competent care setting, integrating digital health resources, and the allocation of special funds to facilitate follow-up and post-discharge care (Farooqi et al., 2022).

Personally, as a nurse, I have observed that patients find it difficult to comprehend and implement complicated care prescriptions, particularly when their health literacy is low or they do not have much support at home. Recurrent readmissions in most hospitals in Washington are due to poor staffing and follow-up with patients, and this makes the already overworked units even more difficult to manage. Please assist me in implementing a certain intervention, including high staffing, funding post-discharge care, and designing specific programs that would assist high-risk patients to make the care offered to all communities safer and more efficient.

    Sincerely,

    Camella Lawan
